It has been awhile since I've kept a personal log on a regular basis. Being an Instructor, one doesn't find as much of a need and even less time to do so. Still, I remember how comforting and good it felt to be able to record ones feelings and ideas, not having to worry about remembering them all.
I've only been aboard for the Peacekeeper for around three hours and already, she's impressed me. Oddly enough, I'm finding it easy to get back into the routine of life aboard a starship, though the Academy can be quite similar sometimes. The food is going to take some getting used to. Maybe I should have asked Mary to pack me something for the trip.
Captain Lange seems to be a fine gentleman, certainly a capable officer. From what I have been able to gather so far, he and his crew have been through an ordeal before getting this posting. It will likely be some time before they are able to come to terms with such a loss and I can only begin to attempt empathizing with them.
As with any assignment, it's always good to get one's bearings. I've taken most of my time here simply walking the corridors of the Peacekeeper, meeting a few of her crew and getting to know the lay of the land, so to speak. Unfortunately, having chosen this posting, I have inadvertently exposed myself to the memories of anyone who might have come through the Academy since my arrival in 2375. Some of these meetings have been awkward to say the least. While I can't say that I remember each one exactly, it has certainly been an interesting experience.
I know that within a few days, this ship will feel like home. Hopefully, during my time here, this crew will begin to feel like a second family, as I can already see the strong relationship between them. Who knows, Admiral Stewart just might get what he wished for...

<With Enemies Like These...> <<Main Bridge, USS Peacekeeper, MD03, 1320>>
Begin Log:
As we continue to shadow our target, a Cardassian Galor-class cruiser, Ensign Young (NPC) and his team have been able to uncover some very interesting information regarding the debris we retrieved a few hours ago. Mr. Young has informed me that the remains we picked up were likely those of an Elyshan faction vessel. Many of the smaller factions along the border are known for their frequent cannibalization of foreign technology. Indeed, the presence of numerous technology signatures was enough to confirm that fact.
However, as the team continued to analyze the debris, they found what appeared to be a data storage node. The contents were severely damaged by the destruction of the vessel and the fact that they are coded in Elyshan has made retrieval difficult. I have chosen to assist the efforts from the bridge, as I wish to be prepared for our contact with the Cardassians.
Imagine my surprise when the captain asked me to lead the boarding party. It has been nearly a decade since I have been in a combat situation, not since the aftermath of the Dominion War. Still, as a Starfleet officer, combat training is a required certification that must be maintained. Thankfully, this old man still has the necessary skills.
Despite my preparedness, it is always my hope that a peaceful solution can be found. Given the nature of our assignment, that seems unlikely. A rogue Cardassian Gul is unlikely to sit and chat. His first reaction will no doubt include a good salvo of weapons fire.
I suppose only time will tell.

[[...Be Wary of Your Enemies]] [[Executive Officer's Office, Starbase 386, Station Day 05, 0220]]
Begin Log:
All is once again quiet on the station. Most personnel who were on alert during the standoff have been relieved by those who have had at least some chance to rest already. I've even dismissed Ensign Gates (NPC), though I know that he would probably go for several days without sleep if it were asked of him. The young man is strong and dedicated, both very admirable traits. He has the potential of becoming a fine officer.
I am certain that the events of the past twenty four hours have had a significant impact on the relationship between the Federation and the Elyshan Empire. No doubt, the captain will want to see the completion of the system defenses as his top priority, which is only reasonable. Until those defenses are in place, the Peacekeeper and the Tinconderoga will be responsible for patrolling the system and keeping an eye out for any further Elyshan activity.
There many different forms of diplomacy and, despite the goal of mutual cooperation and understanding between species, the Federation has encountered races that are not necessarily interested in sitting down at the negotiating table. The Borg sought to assimilate the Alpha Quadrant. The Dominion sought to conquer, realizing too late that they had underestimated the unity of the Allied forces. No doubt, our resilience and adaptivity will allow us to weather this storm.
